Can You Read 방탄소년단?

You probably know BTS.

But can you read their Korean name?

방탄소년단

bang-tan-so-nyun-dan

If you can’t read it yet, that’s okay.

Today we’re going to start with the building blocks of Korean: Hangul consonants and vowels.

No big grammar lesson.

Let’s simply see them, read them, and say them.


First, Meet the Korean Consonants · 자음

ㄱ 기역 · gee-yuk　　ㄴ 니은 · nee-eun
ㄷ 디귿 · dee-geut　　ㄹ 리을 · ree-eul

ㅁ 미음 · mee-eum　　ㅂ 비읍 · bee-eup
ㅅ 시옷 · shee-ot　　ㅇ 이응 · ee-eung

ㅈ 지읒 · jee-eut　　ㅊ 치읓 · chee-eut
ㅋ 키읔 · kee-euk　　ㅌ 티읕 · tee-eut

ㅍ 피읖 · pee-eup　　ㅎ 히읗 · hee-eut

Read them slowly from left to right.

Don’t try to memorize everything yet.

Just look at the letter, read its Korean name, and use the English underneath to help you say it.


Now the Korean Vowels · 모음

ㅏ 아 · ah　　ㅑ 야 · yah
ㅓ 어 · uh　　ㅕ 여 · yuh

ㅗ 오 · oh　　ㅛ 요 · yoh
ㅜ 우 · oo　　ㅠ 유 · yoo

ㅡ 으 · eu　　ㅣ 이 · ee

Now say them together:

아 · 야 · 어 · 여 · 오 · 요 · 우 · 유 · 으 · 이

ah · yah · uh · yuh · oh · yoh · oo · yoo · eu · ee

You’re already reading Korean sounds.


Letter Name vs. Letter Sound

Here’s one little thing to understand.

ㄱ is called:

기역
gee-yuk

But when ㄱ is used inside a Korean word, it can make a sound similar to g/k.

Likewise:

ㄴ 니은 · nee-eun → n

ㄷ 디귿 · dee-geut → d/t

So the English under 기역, 니은, 디귿 helps you pronounce the name of the Korean letter.

The sound the letter makes inside a word is another step.

We’ll learn those naturally as we begin reading.


Let’s Build Our First Hangul

Take one consonant:

ㄱ

and one vowel:

ㅏ

Put them together:

ㄱ + ㅏ = 가

ga

Now keep going.

ㄴ + ㅏ = 나
na

ㄷ + ㅏ = 다
da

ㄹ + ㅏ = 라
ra

ㅁ + ㅏ = 마
ma

Look what happened.

You went from learning individual letters to actually reading Hangul.


Try It!

Don’t look at the English first.

가 · 나 · 다 · 라 · 마

Can you read them?

Now check:

ga · na · da · ra · ma

Ready for more?

바 · 사 · 아 · 자 · 차 · 카 · 타 · 파 · 하

ba · sa · ah · ja · cha · ka · ta · pa · ha

That’s your first Korean reading practice.


Now Look at BTS Again

Remember the Korean word we saw at the beginning?

방탄소년단

bang-tan-so-nyun-dan

Look at it again.

You may not know every letter combination yet.

That’s perfectly fine.

But perhaps it already looks a little less mysterious.

Those aren’t random symbols.

They’re Hangul letters.

And now you’ve started learning how to read them.


One Small Practice

Today, choose just:

5 consonants + 5 vowels.

Say them aloud.

Write them once.

Then try reading:

가 · 나 · 다 · 라 · 마

That’s enough for Day One.

Korean doesn’t have to begin with a giant textbook.

Sometimes it begins with:

ㄱ + ㅏ = 가

and one very satisfying thought:

Wait… I can read Korean!
